A lasting Minnesota legacy
Thomas Sadler Roberts is regarded as the founding father of ornithology in Minnesota. One of his life goals was to produce the authoritative Birds of Minnesota, a two volume set that was published in 1932. It has been the baseline for understanding the status of bird species in the early twentieth century.
Sue Leaf’s very interesting biography of T.S. Roberts fleshes out the man, beyond his strong interest in all things avian. He was a very accomplished doctor of medicine, highly regarded by his clients and sought out by others, especially for his obstetric skills. He championed the importance of sanitary practices in the delivery room before it was widely accepted.
