The Analysis of Complex Cases: Code-Type Interpretation(from the chapter) In this chapter, the use of MMPI-2 profile types, often referred to as code types, are described and illustrated. Code types are MMPI-2 clinical scale summary indexes that include the most elevated scale scores of the basic MMPI-2 patterns. Code-type interpretation for the MMPI-2 was developed early in MMPI history when it was recognized that for some patients, more than one clinical scale might be elevated. It is interesting to note that MMPI interpreters observed that some scale score combinations occurred with greater frequency in some settings, so the interpreters developed empirical descriptions of individuals who matched these MMPI patterns. Research on these patterns draws a valuable picture of the various profile code types and their utility in describing a patient's behavior. In this chapter, I focus on the factors considered important to understand and use the MMPI-2 code types. Well-established behavioral correlates for several of the most frequent MMPI-2 profile codes are illustrated next. Before describing and illustrating code-type interpretation, the author shows how profiles are coded–a practice that ensures that everyone working in the area is using the same profile classification rules to summarize cases.
