Wanda Gag's hometown mulls statue memorial

NEW ULM — Wanda Gag's illustrated children's book "Millions of Cats" has never been out of print since it was first published in 1928. Even so, New Ulm has never had an outdoor sculpture to display of its most-famous native.

A committee is working to find a way and the funds to honor Gag by having a life-size bronze statue created and displayed in her hometown. Community members have talked about the lack of a "Wanda" statue for some time.

Visitors to New Ulm may tour the home where Wanda Gag and her siblings grew up about 100 years ago. Preservation guidelines prohibit the installation of a new sculpture on that historical property; the proposed site, however, would be within walking distance.

Organizers envision a bronze work based on photographs used in a biography of Gag written by her longtime friend Alma Scott. A biographical plaque and a map to the Gag House also would be installed in the sculpture garden.

George L. Glotzbach, a committee member, said it may take several meetings for the proposal to come to fruition.
