MINNEAPOLIS, MN—The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen by Sean Sherman with Beth Dooley has been awarded the 2018 James Beard Foundation Book Award in the Best American Cookbook category. Winners of the 2018 James Beard Media Awards were announced at an exclusive event honoring the nation's top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food journalists at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City on Friday, April 27, 2018.

Established in 1990, the James Beard Awards recognize culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their fields and advance the Foundation’s mission to celebrate, nurture, and honor chefs and other leaders making America's food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone. 

According to Sean Brock, James Beard Award winner, author of Heritage, and executive chef at Husk in Charleston, South Carolina, “Sean Sherman is doing some of the most important culinary work in America. In The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen, he takes a forward-thinking approach to indigenous cuisine, bringing his culture into the light to share with the rest of the world.”

The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen was named one of the best cookbooks of 2017 by NPR, The Village Voice, Smithsonian Magazine, UPPROXX, the San Francisco Chronicle, and others.

The other nominees in the category were Homegrown by Matt Jennings and The Lost Kitchen by Erin French.
