Flames of Discontent (Gary Kaunonen)Gary Kaunonen, author of Flames of Discontent, has won the biennial Hognander Minnesota History Award for his book about the 1916 Minnesota iron ore strike.

This biennial award, supported by the Hognander Family Foundation, recognizes the most outstanding scholarly work published in the previous two years on a topic of Minnesota History. It is announced by the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library and will be presented at the 30th annual Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

According to one of the judges, "This is an important study of a major dispute in Minnesota and, as such, a significant contribution to the state's history. But, it is more than that. Kaunonen's study of the Finnish miners in the Mesabi and Vermillion Iron Ranges and their relationship to the Industrial Workers of the World makes a major contribution to the labor history of the United States."

Two other University of Minnesota Press books have received this award: North Country by Mary Wingerd (2012) and Degrees of Freedom by William D. Green (2016).
