The two books he is most associated with -- 1993's Culture Jamming: Hacking, Slashing and Sniping In The Empire of Signs and 1996's Escape Velocity: Cyberculture at the End of the Century -- were groundbreaking explorations of what was, at the time, a shadowy demimonde of detournement junkies and hacker outlaws, using the establishment tool of postwar technology and media as a fulcrum upon which to move the world.
