Edited by Minnesota Book Award winners Shannon Gibney and Kao Kalia Yang, both of whom have personal experience with infant loss and miscarriage, this first-of-its-kind book is made up of the voices of 23 indigenous women and women of color who write beautifully. It will be launched in Minneapolis Tuesday, Oct. 15, National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

But isn’t the loss of a child the same for all women? After all, our bodies are the same.

 The co-editors cite statistics that explain otherwise. The Center for Disease Control’s most recent study, from 2015, put the overall infant mortality rate at 5.9 percent for every 1,000 births in the United States. But when broken down by race/ethnicity, the rates per 1,000 births were 11.3 percent for black babies, 8.3 percent for American Indian babies, 5 percent for Latinx babies, 4.9 percent for white babies and 4.2 percent for Asian babies.
