Pioneer Press: A look at worthwhile Minnesota-connected books
"The Inconvenient Indian" by Thomas King (University of Minnesota Press, $24.95): King is an award-winning novelist, short-story writer, scriptwriter and photographer who taught at the University of Minnesota in the 1990s. Now he teaches native studies in Canada and writes books like "The Inconvenient Indian," a good-hearted, humorous look at white-native relations in the U.S. and Canada that also makes some serious points.
Subtitled "A Curious Account of Native People in North America," King's book explains why Indians were considered "inconvenient" by white people, beginning when they got in the way of Western expansion. They objected to being pushed onto reservations, they inconveniently demanded their treaty rights and through much of North American history, they just didn't go away quietly.
