New York Daily News: Why Baltimore was a time bomb

Spence_Stare coverAnyone trying to make sense of the riots that overtook Baltimore must understand the backdrop behind the violence:

Since 2011, Baltimore has paid out over $6 million in police-related settlements. Since 2010, more than 100 people have died in encounters with Maryland police (more than 30 of them in Baltimore). Freddie Gray, who died on April 19 after suffering severe spinal injuries while detained by Baltimore police a week earlier, is at least the fourth person to have suffered such injuries at their hands.

Simultaneously, the city is one of the most hyper-segregated in the country.
