How has the idea of the Orient influenced Hollywood films?

Jane Park, author of YELLOW FUTURE, talks with ABC Classic FM about representations of race and ethnicity, particularly of Asiatic peoples and cultures in film and popular media.

Park_Yellow coverDr Jane Park has a PhD in Radio-TV-Film from The University of Texas at Austin and a MA in English from the University of California, Irvine and previously worked at the University of Oklahoma. She has published essays on a variety of topics, including mixed-race Hollywood actors, Japanese-American hip hop, and Korean romantic comedies. Dr Park's first book was published in the US last year and was recently and launched in Australia. It is entitled "Yellow Future: Oriental Style in Contemporary Hollywood Cinema" (University of Minnesota Press) and it examines the ideological role of Asiatic imagery in US films from the 1980s to the present.
