If you haven’t yet read the works of Ellen Willis, many of which have been reissued to deserved acclaim in the last few years, this, her first collection of essays, is a great place to start. Willis’s observations on the music around her remain vital, and challenge more rote music-writing narratives. Willis was also more than capable of delving into her own life to produce powerful nonfiction. The essay "Next Year in Jerusalem," for instance, about her brother’s embrace of Orthodox Judaism, is a particularly powerful example.
