MPQ Overview

Author: Auke Tellegen, Ph.D.
Dr. Tellegen is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota where he was on the faculty from 1968 until his retirement in 1999 as Professor Emeritus. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1962. Recognized for his expertise in personality assessment, he has also contributed to the study of mood, behavior genetics, and hypnosis. Dr. Tellegen serves as psychometric consultant to the University of Minnesota Press, and is co-principal investigator, with Professor Yossef S. Ben-Porath, of the Press's MMPI-2 Restructuring Project. The initial stage in this project was Professor Tellegen's development of the Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales, the first revision of the Clinical Scales developed by S. R. Hathaway and J. C. McKinley for the original MMPI.

MPQ Basic Information

Research Use:
  The MPQ is the personality assessment instrument used in the Minnesota Twins studies since the early 1980s and is currently employed in a number of other personality research projects. It has been used extensively in counseling settings at the University of Minnesota.
Appropriate Ages: 18 and older
Norm Group:
  Extensive normative data have been collected on college and community samples in Minnesota, the latter spanning a wide age range (20s through 60s)
Minimum Reading Level: 6th grade
Administration Time: 30 minutes
Assessment Length: 276 mostly True-False items
