The Mission Statement of the University of Minnesota Press The University of Minnesota Press is a nonprofit scholarly publisher whose primary mission is to disseminate through book publication work of exceptional scholarly quality and originality. The Press draws on and supports the intellectual activities of the University and its faculty in conjunction with the long-term development of its editorial program, thus enhancing the University's missions of research and instruction. In addition to its activities as a scholarly publisher, the University of Minnesota Press publishes books on subjects of academic or scholarly significance that are of interest to the general public. The Press also maintains a longstanding commitment to publishing books that focus on Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, with a particular emphasis on enhancing the understanding that residents and others have of the problems, accomplishments, and potential of the area. In encouraging the publication of both academically grounded books intended for general readers and books that address issues of regional interest, the Press supports and enhances the University's missions of instruction and service to the community. The University of Minnesota Press assumes the editorial function to be proactive. Thus the Press does not simply receive manuscripts and consider them; it actively solicits and commissions works in accordance with its long-term editorial plan, pursuing a program of focused niche publishing. Nevertheless, the Press remains openly committed to a diverse program of publishing that reflects the widest possible range of academic and scholarly research and writing. It is also the Press's editorial policy to actively encourage attention to issues of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation, thus furthering the University's commitment to diversity and nondiscrimination. In addition to the book division, the Press has a test division whose primary responsibility it is to oversee the development of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality instruments in concert with its scientific consultants and the activities of its commercial test distributor, National Computer Systems. The test division also develops personality assessment instruments published directly by the Press. In pursuing these policies, the University of Minnesota Press seeks to strengthen its position as a significant national and international presence in the academic and scholarly community and to support and contribute to the larger mission of the University of Minnesota in instruction, research, and service. |
