Canoe
Trip Recommendations from Calvin Rustrum
Water level must be given special consideration
and, not surprisingly, it can not be described in maps like other
geographical features. A river that was a shallow rapid may, after
a season of heavy rainfall, be a roaring cascade that has to portaged.
Therefore, it is very important to have information on a canoe route,
which should not be thought of as ruining or diminishing the adventure
in the slightest.
To maintain a straight forward course, use
a pitch stroke. In essense, the paddle is put into the water with
the flat surface at a right angle to the side of the canoe. Gradually,
the paddle is turned towards the stern of the canoe. As the stroke
ends and the paddle is brought out of the water without resistance,
it is parallel to the side of the canoe.
Four simple items—waterproof matches,
a shealth knife, nylon leader, and small fishhooks can assure survival
in case of an accident where equipment and food is lost.
A canoe with camping equipment in it is more
stable than an empty one. The reason for this is the center of gravity
has been lowered and greatly counter balanced.
Youth taken on canoeing expeditions need to
be taught to be independent and able to deal with emergency situations
rather than using simple warning and constant lecture-like cautions.
