The world has changed dramatically since 1989.
In Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, an empire has
crumbled, and social movements both new and old have emerged.
In China and other parts of Asia and the so-called Third World,
democracy movements threaten established regimes. In the United
States and Western Europe, a wave of more violent racial and
ethnic movements has appeared. Meanwhile the "new"
social movements of the 1970s and 1980s (the women's movement,
the peace movement, the environmental movement, and the gay and
lesbian movement) have declined or entered new stages in their
existence.
Social Movements, Protest, and Contention
Series reflects both these changes and continuities as well as
recent trends toward the interdisciplinary study of such movements.
Intending to draw on the work of historians, sociologists, political
scientists, and political psychologists, the books in the series
represent research of the highest quality that incorporates comparative,
longitudinal, and historical approaches.
